Restore Forests. Empower Communities.
Join us in protecting Zanzibar’s forests while supporting the communities that depend on them.
Community Forest Management & Restoration Initiative
Forests in Zanzibar play a critical role in supporting biodiversity, regulating climate, and sustaining local livelihoods. However, increasing pressure from unsustainable harvesting, land use changes, and limited governance systems has led to significant degradation of forest areas.
Through this initiative, JUMIJAZA works closely with local communities to reverse this trend by building strong, community-driven forest management systems. The project begins by engaging communities in participatory planning processes, where they identify key challenges, define priorities, and develop locally relevant solutions.
We support the formation and strengthening of community forest management committees, equipping them with the skills and tools needed to effectively oversee forest resources. In parallel, we facilitate restoration efforts through tree planting, natural regeneration, and awareness campaigns that promote responsible resource use.
A key aspect of this project is ensuring that conservation efforts are inclusive and community-owned. By empowering local stakeholders and promoting shared responsibility, the project creates long-term commitment to protecting forest ecosystems.
